Oh, how nice いしじま is, a peanuts shop and soba restaurant Shin and Mei-Shun loves. Their products are really good, including this 鼈甲飴=bekko-ame, caramel candy. Simple technique to boil down caster sugar tastes great as artistic confectionery. And similar one in tiny bottles of sauce was attached to 餡蜜=an-mitsu, alga jelly and red-bean jam by みはし.

Doll Festival
StandardThis is for girls, maybe set to be the counterpart of Children’s Day celebrated mainly for boys on May 5th. Both of them are days of sweets as well, since hina-arare, rice puffs coated with frosty sugar are served on the former while kashiwa-mochi, rice cakes wrapping red bean-paste balls on the latter. For Shin and Mei-Shun, lovely frog faces joined — souvenir from Nagoya.
Round, Round
StandardPurr, it does not only express me on mom’s legs but rice cakes she is into these days. Dad bought them in Kyoto last year-end, too much to consume within new-year holidays. She wraps up frozen one by two pieces of fried tofu, ready to make お稲荷さん=o-inari-san or a rice ball in a tofu bag, before steaming it. Be careful not to make the same shape on your belly.

Knocked Down
StandardMei-Shun chose taneya sweets to treat herself heading for the goal of weight control. Actually, their recent message featured “White Day” collection. It is counterpart of St. Valentine’s Day, set on March 14th. Girls would receive marshmallow, candy and other gifts from boys, like they did the opposite mainly by chocolates. How strong temptation from white baumkuchen is!
Chocolate Day
StandardOr St. Valentine’s Day has come. Mei-Shun ordered much of that delicacy from a chocolatier located in western Tokyo. Bringing one among them chocolate-coated apple jelly, she visited her mother’s home for lunch joined by her elder sister. Time flew above these three women, chat after chat. By the way, that saint seems to prosper again in Europe these days.
No More
Standard… point of no return. Mei-Shun means it on coming March 31st when she visits another hospital for health check. Aiming to reach the real goal, she would resume her methods which tend to be ignored these days. Less exercise caused by rainfall also makes her vulnerable toward weight gaining. May she treat herself to 冨貴寄, reserving the biggest can to be delivered on above date?
Thanking U
Standard… to you, Shin. He cooked Chinese-style pot dish for Mei-Shun on Saturday when lunar January started. If it is Japanese one, the wife is happy to make. However, she does not know how to do for the counterpart of our neighbor country. Full of spice including 花椒=huajiao or Sichuan pepper, garlic and red chili, he fried handmade beef ball and potato starch-coated chicken to put them together into the pot with various vegetables.
Scary Season
StandardSince new-year weight gaining, Mei-Shun managed to control it into her new normal. It is said once you get obesity, body would like to keep it. In other words, even if your weight is lost, it would easily return to the maximum point anytime. She therefore has to keep fighting against her appetite and negligence for life to stay healthy. Here our St. Valentine’s Day full of chocolate approaches.
Never Bite
StandardHere are ice milk balls which help Mei-Shun much these days. Similar to hard candies in size and calories, this product satisfies her especially after meal. Although the former take long time to melt in mouth by heat, the latter promptly flow into throat keeping cool texture. Still, a feeling almost the same as a spoonful of ice cream is given. Better than leaving half a cup or a bar, isn’t it?
From Kyoto
StandardThanks a million, Shin, a hard worker even on weekends. Following are his souvenirs including 縮緬山椒=chirimen sansho, dried anchovy and Japanese pepper and 千枚漬=sen-mai-zuke, 聖護院 horseradish pickles by Mei-Shun’s request. And the best is a bag of cute, round rice cakes. They are amazingly soft and tasty after a whole day, no need to bake to put into お雑煮=o-zoni, our new-year soup.
