Here is kohlrabi Mei-Shun met for the first time. They say it means “cabbage and radish” in German, derives from B. oleracea. Its scent might come from the former while shape from the latter. Quite cute in looks, it gives crispy texture before fried. Scrambled with eggs, sweetness and refreshing hotness in a distant dance within your mouth. Easy to grow at home? Well, that sounds very nice.

Out of Blue Bags
StandardMei-Shun learned it the other day. Her soup never became salty enough even after she added 4 teaspoons of the white, dry grain. She took it as coming from her condition, gave up to make more. When Shin tried hearing his wife’s wondering, he also failed, just told her “it tastes all right”. Now, he opened a corn can, spread a pinch of salt on it and burst into laughter — it was granulated sugar!
Lecture for U
StandardMei-Shun has done a course to be a legal guardian, hoping that she could contribute to hyper-aged Japanese society through this system. Her result of qualification test will be informed in a week. DVD lectures were aired at a community center in Ishioka City where a nice confectionary shop 羽鳥屋 serves nearby. European/Japanese sweets are displayed neatly, tastes great with reasonable price.
Persimmon Art
StandardDr. K kindly sent a box of beautiful 富有柿 to Mei-Shun the other day. She was very happy while a bit surprised, e-mailed him to show her appreciation. He immediately replied that above persimmons are from his birthplace 岐阜. His remote relatives living there own an orchid, began to enclose these beautiful leaves and a leaflet in fruit boxes following his wife’s advice.
Hot N Cold
StandardWhich would you like, tea or coffee along with marvelous desserts in dry and warm air, both indoors and outdoors? Mei-Shun’s favorite café around here in Ibaraki Prefecture gives you perfect satisfaction. Since the friendly owner is a flower lover, you can enjoy autumn roses both planted and in vases right now. Following strawberry-colored cup was served by another in different occupation, yet they nicely share hospitality.
Japanese Culture@holiday
StandardMilk after bathing! Have you ever tried it? Mei-Shun heard that many people in her home country love to drink a glass of cold milk (or beer for adults) after taking a hot bath. It looks quite good for health, since we lose much water by perspiration while warming ourselves in bathtubs. Oh, please do not forget to place your free hand on the waist during this superb experience.
Best Moon
StandardOh, she comes up from tree tops. Mei-Shun feels so happy to have such a clear sky, which slight shower washed crossing sunshine yesterday. We can enjoy 十五夜 or 仲秋の名月=chushu-no-meigetsu, the most beautiful moon in the middle of autumn tonight. Thanks to Shin who brought tasty 月餅 from Hong Kong on weekend, his wife passed by sweet rice dumplings this year.
Peach Princess
StandardNamed きららの極み=kirara-no-kiwami, Extremely Shiny, they arrived into Mei-Shun’s arms. How pretty, and how tasty you are left in room temperature for three days! Growers recommend to have them immediately after delivery, yet she prefers softer mouthfeel. Interested in environmental difference, she put tags on each fruit to recognize time before stored in the refrigerator.
Happy Birthday
StandardMom, Mei-Shun and her elder sister would like to say it again. They gathered at her home today to hold a lunch party celebrating her 2-month-delayed anniversary. She told them that a pack of crape mix is available, yet it was found to be for pancakes. Well, no problem. Two housewives were flexible enough to bake, cook and serve; green vegetable soup, pumpkin salad, potato filling and a mountain of pancakes were on the table.
After Harvest
StandardThey have grown green again. Several 彼岸花 or 曼珠沙華, red spider lilies trim current rice paddy. According to Shin, those dried bunches of rice were for growers themselves. Such care is too high-maintenance to serve for mass consumption. Oh, regarding newly harvested rice, Mei-Shun received some the other day from a police officer who was involved in a traffic safety campaign.
